Mind your manners! How we teach valuable life skills in our preschool in West Cary, NC

Posted on 06-11-2014

Manners are a crucial component of a child's social development and are essential to becoming a successful adult.

At Kids 'R'Kids Learning Academy of West Cary, we value the benefits of courtesy and strive to foster these valuable life skills in our preschool curriculum. As an outstanding provider of childcare and education, we offer well-rounded development and unmatched learning opportunities for children.

Why should pre-schoolers learn about manners?

  • Good manners lead to lifelong success. Instilling manners should be a natural progression of maturing from childhood to adolescence, and into adulthood. Manners are essential on a daily basis, and when taught with consistency and patience, your child will incorporate and benefit from these life skills forever.
  • Sharing. The phrase "sharing is caring" is always applicable. Sharing is a sign of respect and consideration toward others. A beneficial teaching method for this is to ask your child how they want to be treated, and request that they do the same to others. This teaches empathy, respect, and an understanding of feelings by their peers as well as adults.
  • Everybody wants - and deserves - to be heard. Allowing someone to finish talking before interrupting is essential for good communication skills. Teaching a child to raise their hand or remain quiet until someone is finished speaking is important both academically and socially. Once it is the child's turn, give them your undivided attention, which instills an example of patience and politeness.
  • "Please" and "thank you" are phrases that are not negotiable. These are the easiest manners to learn, especially with parents leading by example. When your child is offered something, explain the "please" and "thank you" rule. If they do not respond appropriately when given an item, remind them, "Now, what do we say?" This helps instill the habit. This requires repetition added with praise when they remember. The behavior becomes a great habit when mastered and has lifelong benefits.
  • When coughing and sneezing, it is both polite and healthy to cover mouths and noses. At this age, children are learning about both hygiene and manners. Teaching the habit of covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing helps prevent the spread of germs and lessens the chances they will become sick or expose others to illness.
  • Do not snatch or grab. Grabbing for something is a reflex that originates during infancy. As children grow to pre-school age, it's important that we replace this automatic reaction with a more polite way of reaching for something. This is both for good manners and their own safety. Should a parent be holding something sharp or hot, having a child reflexively grab it could have disastrous consequences.

Having your child practice their social skills away from pre-school is beneficial. A child-friendly environment such as Marbles Kids Museum offers many events, activities, and hands-on play opportunities that encourage fun interaction between children, both indoors and outdoors.

Our pre-school provides the perfect social setting and guidance to teach your child the importance of manners, while also helping them to develop healthy social bonds with both peers and teachers. For more information about our pre-school or to enroll your child, please contact us today.
